COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE ESL
Program

Description

Students will learn practical communication skills that go beyond just academic English.

They will practice writing and speaking through tasks like creating advertisements, giving presentations, and joining discussions. This helps them become confident and effective communicators in both academic and professional settings.

The program also focuses on listening, reading, and writing, ensuring students develop a well-rounded skill set for real-life situations.

Students will also learn about American culture, which includes holidays, traditions, and popular aspects like Hollywood and national parks.

This cultural exposure helps them understand and appreciate different perspectives, making them more culturally sensitive. Through hands-on activities like projects and field trips, students will engage in real-world learning experiences that promote collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. This prepares them for success in a diverse and dynamic world.

Skills to be Learned

Students in the "Communication and Culture - ESL Program" will develop skills in cross-cultural communication, critical thinking, and both spoken and written expression.

They will learn to articulate ideas clearly in discussions and debates, compose culturally appropriate written communications, and analyze American cultural themes through media and reflections.

Presentation skills will be honed through research projects, while role-plays and field trips will build adaptability and cultural sensitivity.

Creative expression is encouraged through advertising campaigns and persuasive materials, with teamwork and reflective thinking fostered through group projects and podcast episodes. Student achievements will be measured using rubrics, peer feedback, and instructor evaluations.

Instructional Method

Classroom lecture, small group discussions, computer assisted teaching, classroom assignments, homework, quizzes, exams, formal presentations, analysis and field trips.

Placement Test

Students are placed in the appropriate level of English classes based on their Placement Test results, which assess Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing skills.

The Communication & Culture Program has two levels: Lower Level (for scores in Levels 3 and 4) and Upper Level (for scores in Levels 5 and 6).

Each level consists of two modules, totaling six months. However, this program cannot be used for transferring to a partner college or university; students must complete Academic Level 6 or meet the receiving institution’s English proficiency requirements through a qualifying test.
